The Pink Ribbon Trailblazers are gearing up for our second annual "Fun"raiser on the Polly Ann Trail in Oxford, Michigan Our goal is to enable as many women as possible who are under served and uninsured to receive a free mammogram regardless of age.

Our group formed in May of 2007. Our success on August 4, 2007, was phenomenal. Seeing it was our first year, our goal was to provide 30 mammograms. In September of 2007 we presented a $14,040 check to the Breast Health Program at St. Joe. Not only did we have enough money for 130 women to receive a free mammogram, we could also provide 26 ultrasounds.

I remember the day I heard those words "You have breast cancer." I actually looked around to see who the Dr. was speaking to. I'm a six year breast cancer survivor now and a 10 month lung cancer survivor. Our committee has seven breast cancer survivors. We are a group of dedicated individuals that felt the need to give back to those who helped us along the way.

Council Of Catholic Women Operation Layette

One of our most important programs is Operation Layette. This is our outreach to mothers who are not able to provide needed items for their newborn babies. We collect new items, such as blankets, sheets, diapers, onesies, undershirts, and other items which a new mother might need. These are assembled into layettes and given to women who need them. They are requested by organizations helping these women such as Catholic Family Services, Oakland County Department of Human Services, the Oakland County Criminal Justice Ministry and many others. Requests also come from parishes who have a member with needs.

Each layette is valued at $70. Items are supplied by members whose parishes put on ‘baby showers’ or other collections such as items on Christmas Giving Trees. Individual members also make donations at one or more of our meetings per year. Our members purchase these items or in many cases they hand knit or crochet them. This is one program in which almost all of our members participate.

Every year the need increases. In the last year we have averaged 36 layettes per month. If you have questions about this program, or would like to make a donation to it, call the CCW/AD office at 313-237-5896. This year we are celebrating 70 years of service to our parishes and archdiocese. Call the above number for more information and to learn about becoming a member.
